Amsterdam ! Ah Amsterdam.
A City that is whatever you want it to be.
If you want to go somewhere and get totally stoned, this is the place.
If you want to go somewhere and make love to some beautiful women, this is the place.
If you want to visit one of Europe’s finest sports arenas, this is the place.
If you want to have a great laugh with friendly locals in cool bars, this is the place.
If you want to eat well in some of the finest restaurants, this is the place.
I can recommend the Kantjil En De Tijger at 291-293 Spuistraat.
If you want to visit some of the finest art museums, this is the place.
If you want to shop for expensive jewelery, this is the place.
If you want to walk along a street in a straight line, this is not the place, the bloody streets are in a horseshoe pattern.
If you want something to ’sober’you up after a heavy night on the booze, this is the place, or should I say, The Anne Frank House is. This house brings home the horrors of the second world war. Go there and you will realise how lucky you are to be who you are, from where you are. There, but for the grace of god…………
So! Is Amsterdam as seedy as some people suggest? Only if you want it to be.
The red light district is an amazing place to visit, an eye opener, with women behind windows who wouldn’t look out of place on a catwalk and others who wouldn’t look out of place in a zoo.
Is Amsterdam a dangerous place to visit? Only if you want it to be.
If somebody appears out of a doorway offering hard drugs, politely refuse, if you don’t want to buy. Don’t be offended and abuse him, because that is when his mates will appear.
I feel as safe in Amsterdam as I do in my own village.
Go to Amsterdam, try the food on offer in the many bakeries. Try all the different beers available and try to get a table at the Kantjil. Indonesian food at it’s very best. The number of locals eating there tells it’s own tale.
Try some drugs if that’s what floats your boat.
Try not to get lost
