Where should you stay during your visit to Amsterdam? The American Hotel, of course! This is the new American Hotel, not to be confused with the original that was torn down after only eight years! This hotel was erected in 1902 and with its many turrets and remodeled interior, is one of the best hotels to stay in during your visit to Amsterdam. This is mostly due to its location:
Near the Vondelpark*.
*Vondelpark is the largest public park in Amsterdam and is one of the most popular in all of the Netherlands.
One of the ways to see this lovely city:
There really are quite a few ways tourists have opted to see the many sights of Amsterdam over the years. Perhaps one of the most popular is the many canal cruises that are offered. The canal cruises, there are about a half dozen or so companies that offer the canal tours, the most popular being the oldest: The Tourist. On this Luxury Collection Canal Cruise visitors go cruising along the ancient canals with their illuminated bridges while enjoying an intimate candle-lit dinner aboard “The Tourist”. This truly must be the most romantic experience a visitor to Amsterdam can get.
“The Tourist” was built in 1909. She was the first canal-tour boat in Amsterdam, making history when she was launched. The Luxury Collection Canal Cruise on The Tourist can be taken everyday at 5:00 p.m., when “The Tourist” departs from the dock of Hotel Pulitzer for her daily guided cruise-tour visiting the highlights of the city.
There are other canal cruises that probably cost a lot less however. Two of these are: The Canal Bus and the Museum Boat.
The Canal Bus (www.canal.nl) our first alternative, runs every 40 minutes from during most of the day, with an average of 14 stops along three different routes throughout the city.
The Museumboot (or Museum Boat) is yet another popular alternative canal-cruise with tour stops at, Prinsengracht, Leidseplein, Muziektheater, Herengracht, Central Station, and the East Dock. One can also enjoy many of the cities lovely museums for half cost by taking this particular cruise.
There are several other choices as well, even a Lover’s Cruise line for the young at heart! Many of these canal cruises offer breakfast, lunch and dinner cruises and some even have coffee cruises. They are a wonderful way to see the city in a short time period.
Author’s Note: I have read that these canal-cruises are not popular for the young. I for one find this terribly hard to believe. If one is visiting this lovely city for the first time, these canal-cruises sound like great fun for the whole family!
