Amsterdam

Certain thoughts come to mind when thinking of Amsterdam, coffee shops that sell soft drugs, legalized prostitution Van Gogh and Heineken, but that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Amsterdam which is located in the Netherlands(Holland) and is on the tip of Europe right across from England. The language spoken here is dutch but everyone speaks English!

Upon visiting Amsterdam one might be a little overwhelmed, in a city the thrives with public transportation it is very easy to feel….well insignificant. Trams, buses, taxis, boats, bikes, just to name a few are everywhere you look, which makes choosing a mode of transportation a little difficult. The locals seem to prefer the trams and you can buy a 15 punch card(called Strippenkaart), a 3 day pass or a 5 day pass which can run you 5-15 euros and can be found at most convenience stores.

Staying in Amsterdam can be expensive when it comes to accommodations, a hotel can run from 130 euros to 300 a night so don’t be afraid to look around and try to find the best deal. If your to look less like a tourist and more like a local rent an apartment, there cheaper and give the full experience of what it’s like to exist in this city of over 3 million. If your budgets really low you might want to look into Hostels which are definitely the cheapest way to go and there are at least a dozen.

When it comes to finding something to do Amsterdam has alot to offer. First of all a controversial walk down the sleazy Damrak right by Centraal Station is almost necessary to understand how things work here. To get a feeling of how old this city is head to the Museumplein, the part of town to see the artists Amsterdam’s famous for, Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Amsterdam has its wide array of parks to that should be visited, Westerpark and Vondlepark being the best and most visited. Eating out in Amsterdam can be very expensive, I suggest going to the store or going to small eateries as opposed to going to a sit down restaurant(which can cost 50 euros for a good meal. Luckily the cuisine here is international, so you can try food from many different countries.

As for the nightlife there are clubs designed to match individuals and some to cater to the average joe. This city doesn’t really die down at night so you should never be bored if you know where to look.

I hope this encourages people to check out what Amsterdam has to offer. I know that someday I will make it back to Amsterdam but until than Tot ziens vrienden.
