Although most of Amsterdam still makes you feel as though you have stepped into the 17th century, it can best be described as a cosmopolitan village. If you are restricted to a single day in this wonderful little city then you need to determine what to do that will bring you the most satisfaction.
Take a Walk
Always a favorite, you can wander aimlessly along the canals just soaking in the extraordinary ambience. But if you enjoy a little more direction or structure, New Amsterdam Tours provides a free 3-hour walking tour requiring no reservation. You simply meet the guide near Centraal Station just outside the Tourist Information Office at 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. Lasting about three hours the tour will take you through the Red Light District, the Jewish Quarter, the Jordaan District, the Begijhof Convent, and past the Old Church, the Royal Palace, the Anne Frank House, the widest bridge and narrowest house, and much more. They walk every day, rain or shine. Guides are English speaking and appreciate tips. This would be a great way to orient yourself while not taking up a great deal of your day.
As you walk along admiring the fabulous gables and interesting shops, be careful not to walk in the bike paths and listen for the bell that cyclists use to warn you of their approach.
Regain Your Appreciation of the Wheel
Amsterdam is as flat as one of its pancakes making it a pleasure to peddle around. Age is not relevant to the Dutch when it comes to riding a bike as they are the most convenient form of transportation ridden by tots, teens, professionals, and seniors. You can rent a bike for a few hours, a few days or by the week. There are designated bike paths and traffic signs for cyclists. If you decide to rent a bike be sure to lock it as directed. Bike theft is the inspiration for bikes painted flamboyant colors and decorated in outrageous fashion in the hope bike thieves will move on to a less distinguishable ride.
Pick a Museum, Any Museum
With over 50 from which to choose, museum offerings are a perfect example of Amsterdam diversity. Many people consider a visit to the Anne Frank house as mandatory. The inspirational words of this brave young woman have been translated into many languages and read by thousands. A visit to the Anne Frank House lasts around one hour and sticks in the heart forever. For those who appreciate fine art the day can be spent visiting the Van Gogh (the largest Van Gogh collection presented in chronological order),
