Capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam is an instantly lovable place with more bikes than cars, beautiful weather, and what seems like a million cafes at the turn of every corner. Although with a reputation a little on the wild side, Amsterdam has much more to offer when you look further.
Beyond the exciting night life of the city lie the little treasures of Amsterdam, literally as well. Diamonds are something that makes this quaint city well known in the world of trade, but Amsterdam’s treasures lie more in the 51 museums all around.
The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam or Rijksmuseum is one of the major museums in Amsterdam. The Night Watch is its most famous painting, a work of art by painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Though there is a museum called The Rembrandt House Museum, a place where the painter himself lived, his most famous artwork still goes on prominent display in Rijksmuseum. Other painters whose works are well known in that museum are Jacob van Ruysdael and Frans Hals.
Another famous museum in Amsterdam would be the Van Gogh Museum, which holds the largest collections of his paintings and works in the world today. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter famous for his brilliant artworks, some of which include “The Potato Eaters”, and “Sunflowers”.
The fantastic thing about the museums in Amsterdam is that no two are alike. One such example is the Anne Frank House. The story centre’s around a girl living in the WWII period, and writing in her diary about her daily life. People flock from all over the world to see the secret rooms and most of all, the diary of Anne Frank. Converted into a museum after an estate agent decided he wanted the building demolished, it remains one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam till today.
Another complete “one-eighty turn” from the museums housing classical paintings would be the Stedelijk Museum. This museum houses modern art collections and is a popular place to be not only for the paintings and artwork, but for the panoramic view of the city you get when you’re at the top floor.
The Amsterdam’s Historisch Museum, The Jewish Historical Museum, The Maritime Museum; the list goes on. Each one totally different from the next, you’ll be spoilt for choice on which to go visit. No disappointments though, Classical or Contemporary, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Amsterdam.
