Amsterdam: An independent traveler’s dream

Amsterdam is an independent traveler’s dream come true. With its fantastic museums and galleries, it’s a perfect weekend city escape while with its Red Light District, infamous Coffee Shops and countless cheap bars, it’s ideal for the backpacker or student traveler, too.

Amsterdam is the fifth busiest tourist destination in the whole of Europe, with more than 4.2 million international visitors. And it’s never being exactly difficult to find a cheap hostel in amsterdam — it seems there are even more rooms for let than there are bicycles on its beautiful streets!

Amsterdam is one of the very hippest holiday destinations in Europe and is popular among backpackers and family holidaymakers alike. The city offers plenty to do along its charming narrow roads. There’s also a beautiful array of architecture which makes you feel as though you’re stepping back into the 16th or 17th century.

The nature of the city is such that backpackers can easily explore the area on foot or on a bicycle. Serene tree-lined promenades are perfect for a gentle amble along its iconic canals.

If people-watching is your preferred pursuit, the ideal place to visit is Leidseplein, which is constantly bustling with activity throughout the summer. Another nice square is Rembrandtplein which has plenty of quaint little cafes and terraces.

Events

The official national celebration of Queen’s Day is at the end of April and is marked by lots of fun-packed festivities. Celebrations take place all over the Netherlands, but the big cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam especially celebrate it with gusto.

Between April 9th and 20th, the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival comes to town with a whole week of film screenings of fantasy, anime, thriller, cult, horror and sci-fi movies. Screenings this year are at Pathe Tuschinski.

Sports

For sports lovers, Amsterdam is the hometown of the world-famous football club Ajax, whose home is the Amsterdam ArenA stadium, located in the southeast of the city.

The city also has a baseball team called the Amsterdam Pirates, who play in the Dutch Major League. Amsterdam, Pinoke and Hurley are just three of Amsterdam’s field hockey teams and they play their matches around the Wagener Stadium.
